SC County Park ChauRam

  1. ChauRam is a small but very nice and well run campground. There are 27 sites around a loop. It had the cleanest campground bathrooms I have seen anywhere. It is shady with a mix of pines and hardwoods. The staff are constantly checking on things and are very attentive to any needs that come up.

The name is combination of the Chauga River and Ramsey Creek which flow through the park. There is 30 feet tall waterfall on the Ramsey Creek and several cascades on the Chauga River. There is a picnic area near the confluence of the two namesake waterways. A suspension bridge takes you to an area with several hiking trails and places to swim. Trout fishing in the Chauga River is popular here as is tubing. Part of the movie "Deliverance" was filmed on the River in the early '70s. It is possible to Whitewater kayak the River. Also very close by is the Chatooga River where you can kayak or take a guided whitewater raft trip. At the SC/GA stateline is a Forest Service Rec area with more trails and you can watch the rafts and kayaks come through Bull Sluice rapid . In the Long Creek area on the way to GA you will find apples to pick from mid August to November. A favorite side trip will be over to Dillard, GA to eat at the Dillard House. The food is served family style so take a big appetite, you will need it.

The campground has electric hookups and water at each site. The sites are gravel and mostly back in. Strict no alcohol policy means it is mostly families. It is built on a steephill and the bathroom is at the top so you may need to consider that if walking up a hill is a problem. Firewood is sold here at a self pay station. The hill does make the sites terraced so you are looking up or down at your neighbors.
