Picacho Peak State Park is a local state park for Tucson, AZ, just off Interstate 10. Picacho Peak is visible from downtown Tucson and Green Valley, over 40 miles away, and is truly spectacular for a desert park. There are trails to the top of the 3300'+ peak for the adventurous, but be prepared and bring sunscreen and water! The peak has been a location landmark for the indigenous peoples of the southwest for centuries. Abundant suguaro and prickly pear cactus, Joshua trees and many, many other plant and animal species.
Although adjacent to the interstate, the campsites are about half a mile away, far enough to allow peace and serenity overnight. Restrooms include showers; campsites provide water and electric only. At $20 a night, it's a good deal.
The park is gated and open from 8 am - 10 pm. After 5 pm, you can self-pay for camping - or pay on the way out. The rangers are very easygoing and friendly, but will roust you before 8 am to remind you to pay if you hadn't the night before.
