Wallowa Lake State Park (Joseph)

Mick'nSarah

Junior Ranger
The lad and I just returned from two nights in Northeastern Oregon. We stayed at Wallowa Lake State Park which is 6 miles outside the wonderfully sleepy town of Joseph. It sits right on the banks of the lake, at the base where Mt Joseph and Mt Howard come together and has its own marina.

We got the very last spot available for the days we were there and were stuck in D group which had decent sized spots, but they felt really packed in. There were people everywhere. We had to wait 25 minutes for a shower one night and the first night we were there, it was probably the loudest campground I have ever been in with a constant chorus of screaming children and barking dogs. The landscape sure helps the sound travel.

For all of the amazing and scenic beauty this campground shouldn't be missed, but perhaps consider any other time of year other than summer if the noise will bother you. To be blunt, Uncle Frank would have packed up and left. BKTs to the ultimate MAX!

The lake boasts some nice swimming on hot days and folks were doing a lot of fishing. There is loads of hiking and no less than 5 mini-golf places within walking distance. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (amazing by the way) is a short drive.

The town of Joseph is home to a couple of foundaries where they make amazing bronze sculptures and they have a couple of galleries in town showcasing them. I hear there are foundary tours as well.

I really love it out there but will avoid D group and try to get back out when it is a bit quieter.

Hi Sarah!

Thanks for the tip on group D. For many, camping is all about family and that means kids and pets (I raise my hand here for when we were young), but for many more (and we are in this category now) it is the promise of silence and the glory of unspoilt nature that thrums our heartstrings. Wallowa Lake is now on our list.

Thanks again and....

Camp on

Sue
