    Just Checkin' In

Hi! A word of caution about the Natchez Trace. The problem areas are Tupelo (not too bad) and Jackson. Both are the urban areas along this mostly rural stretch of very scenic road. Several years back, someone's loved one was killed along one of those two stretches. That led to MS adopting...

    Just Checkin' In

I e-mailed Cary today and he mentioned that somebody had asked what had happened to us, and suggested that we let everyone know that we are OK. The reason that we haven't been active on the forum lately is pretty simple. For two years we limped by with cheap cell service and limited internet...

Best Towing Cars - Us New & World Article

It should be pointed out that seemingly all of these vehicles provide more than twice the tow capacity needed to pull a 550. Thus there are many more options for most teardrop owners - less expensive vehicles with lower costs of ownership. The vehicles in the article would be what is needed to...

    Hello Fellow Camp-inners

    Florida Parks

There are a number of USFS campgrounds to the east of the Villages. If you happen to be over 62 and have a pass, then it is half price. Many have showers. I think a few have power. They are all decent campgrounds (we have stayed at a few of the primitive sites), though bears are a potential...

    Galley Table Leg Securing Tip!!!

I like the blocks as a solution, but I am too cheap to spring for a complete set, when we will likely only use one. But this a problem that we have hemmed and hawed about for a long time now. This thread has spurred us to action. I bought a 2"x3/16" eye bolt and drilled a hole for it near the...

    Transporting Generator And Gasoline

Nice, if it would work. There clearly is not sufficient room on a 550.

    Transporting Generator And Gasoline

We have hauled our generator around continuously for 26 months - no problems with smells. Just be certain to open the cap vent daily, especially in hot weather. That will create some fumes, but they dissipate quickly if you leave the doors open for a few minutes.

Sighting Homebuilt Teardrop With A Cycling Theme

We don't see a lot of cyclists on the road (perhaps a couple per month), nor many teardrops (a similar number), so our recent find has double significance. We pull our teardrop with a cycling-themed van, so we were very intrigued by this home built teardrop shaped trailer with a ten speed...

Custom Strap Handles for the Dometic Refrigerator

Keep in mind that with my design you just slide it into place, there is no need to worry about squeezing the handles in so that they stay clear on the stove side (the opposite side isn't as much of a problem, as the "hockey stick" offsets that side to allow room for the cord plugs and to allow...

    Dometic, or another brand?

We are late chiming in on this thread, but having once dropped our Dometic on the ground (thanks to a dog/squirrel encounter) and having run it a lot over five years, including two years of non-stop use, it is definitely the way to go. As to power consumption, unless you are only taking your...

Custom Strap Handles for the Dometic Refrigerator

I think it may have been Rotus8 who originally used tube strap for a Dometic handle. With the dowel or pipe stuffed in it, I had a hard time envisioning how you could squeeze it into the galley storage space. But obviously, if that part of the handle is laid on top when it is being stowed...

Custom Strap Handles for the Dometic Refrigerator

It has been well over a year since I posted about our Dometic strap handles, so thought I would provide an update. The design works exceptionally well, holding up to daily use, including lugging the Dometic back and forth form the camper to the van twice a day. I wouldn't change a thing from...

    Battery Booster And Air Compressor

I don't know what your tow vehicle is, but if you are towing a 560 it is likely to have a fairly heavy duty battery. And how any auto battery compares to the camper's AGM battery is a total mystery to me. I suspect the larger the tow vehicle, the more substantial the battery's capacity as...

    Battery Booster And Air Compressor

Most brief sightseeing stops shouldn't be an issue (that really depends upon when the compressor chooses to cycle on - it could cycle on while you are driving, or choose to wait until the ignition is turned off). It is the longer overnight storage that is the main challenge. There is indeed a...

    Battery Booster And Air Compressor

I agree with points made by dustinp. The problem with running the refrigerator in the tow vehicle is that it is a large draw on the battery. There is no simple, practical way of solving that problem. Check out the website for Battery Tender. They make a battery monitor that can alert you...

    550 / 560 Spare Tire

According to a poster in a Walmart in Grand Forks, ND, the sort of damage that we experienced is the result of severe under inflation. My best guess is that at some point we either developed a slow leak or the valve failed suddenly. If it was a leak (fairly likely, as we routinely pull off by...

    550 / 560 Spare Tire

The plot thickens.... It is interesting that Walmart inflated the new tire to 50 psi. I might have to call about this. Thanks for the link!

    Oly's custom additions to 560

Nice thought, but some of us wouldn't want to give up that knee space. Since we use inexpensive Chromebooks ($200), we stuff them next to the mattress in the foot well next to the door. They get a bit scuffed up, but then that makes them even less appealing to thieves.
