Cleaning

I have been using a local coin-op carwash to clean Serenity, but, as a mega-automated carwash moved it across the street, I know its days are numbered - and the other coin-op closed about 18 months ago, leaving no coin-op spray-wand style carwashes anywhere near me. I needed another option.

Plan B was the purchased a small electric pressure washer and foam cannon. It was not bad, but I was still left with the problem of spots. My domestic water supply is from a well, and has a hardness rating of somewhere just shy of granite. The only thing I've found is using deionized water as a final rise which works, but is expensive due to resin costs. I tried some chemicals that are supposed to act as a spot free rinse, but they were ineffective.

I also wanted to strip the layer of carnuba wax off and re-apply it, since at this point I am sure it is thin, if not simply gone from now a couple years of rather heavy camping. Its also 23 degrees outside, so my options were limited.

I picked up a can of "Sprayway" window cleaner being reminded of the smell of "Honda Polish" and I was not left disappointed!

Sprayway is sold as a foaming streak-free window/glass cleaner. I've used it on glass for years, and been happy with it. So, I took my can and a roll of disposable microfiber towels and headed to the garage. Holy cow! I did do a 'small spot' in an inconspicuous place. But jumped into the clean by spraying down smaller sections and just giving a wipe with the microfiber. Quite literally no more than 30 minutes later the sides and galley hatch were done. This is far less than the time it takes to get out the hose, pressure washer, and DI filter. With an order of magnitude better results.

I did a little quick research and found that the active ingredient in the window cleaner is 2-Butoxyethanol. The fun surprise is that this chemical's primary function is as an aluminum cleaner, which probably explains a lot :D The aluminum feels smooth, with no residue --- just the surface scratches and marks that come from a lot of 'hard use' which I have certainly put my Serenity through in the past couple years...

If you're insistant on a wax coat, it is probably not the best option, it strips that off quickly and easily. But for summer use or annual stripping -- I have to say...this is the best solution I've found so far.

So....for your spring clean -- let me know what you think.

Stickers.

I still have a little of both ;) --- the "serenity" vinyl did not come off, and I have still a few scuffs, and rings from suction cups. But, they are as clean and smooth as a fresh shave. I still have a few places to make a "last pass" on, thats my plan for tomorrow. The trouble I have is Serenity is pushed up against an exterior wall and the fat kid can't fit in there -- 5 minutes more buffing and 20 minuets of wrangling the camper :)

I still want to 'dip' it, but not going to happen this year.

You're putting way too much work into it.

Since picking it up in the summer of '21 and without even trying I've got an ugly scratch on the side with no idea how, I've got buff marks from a grocery bag stuck on the door handle going down the freeway, I've got small pit marks from rocks even with an Alcan cover, I have hard water spots because that's all I have to wash it with every time I return from using it and a few other weird spots below the galley hatch that don't seem to wash away.

Not to mention you should see the back bumper of my car as I learned how to back it up! LoL!

I bought it new, I'll sell it used, and be proud of how it got used!

Patina! Embrace the shame!
I inherited a couple dings and corroded spots plus patches of brand new alum involving a sketchy event by previous owner,

so other than regular fresh water wax and car wash spray wax, its an experiment in ignore the imperfections while curating a fine patina.

If you haven't creased your bumper by missing the hitch ball you havent been camping enough!
Thats my story and sticking with it...!

LOL --- I fall somewhere on the spectrum :)

I usually just give it a bath two or three times a summer --- and if it is a gathering or some 'special' occasion. Its not an every trip thing. The DI rinse and all that stuff comes from a failed business venture.

I think too the highly acidic bugs (love bugs in Florida for example) will damage and become permanent, I'd like to be a "little clean" - Definatey not obsessive.

I've got those too --- and a few deep scratches -- and a few marks from suction cups. Dipping is still in the future - but all of this is to protect it from Salt. In this case the clean surface is to make an application of wax easier...

Ya, I recall perusing all the 20 years of questions on the options and concur- the marine wax seems to ne next easiest and most salt protective after patina.

I'll tell you whats really acidic is owl shite!
A debate could be had: Worse than sea gulls?

I'd love to see about ceramic coating -- the trouble with it is, once you put it on it doesn't come off and when it does, I'm guessing will will flake off leaving uneven protection.

The wax I found (Collinite 885 fleetwax) is still the most pleasurable I've found to work with. Goes out easy, smells good, and buffs out very nicely. If it ever warms up and stops snowing, I'm ready to put on another coat. Though, I probably need to buy some more -- I don' think I have enough.
