AR Maumelle Park

Ranger
Despite inadvisable heat, we rolled Muiriel down to Arkansas and the Little Rock area for a quick holiday weekend of camping. It’s about a six hour drive from the house. We haven’t had much chance to camp this year, and will have even less of a chance in the fall when I enter a four month long school right as the weather gets more agreeable for a camper with no A/C.

Some friends of ours had a reservation for their TT at Maumelle Park and we tagged along with them. Some confusion with the reservation and the rules led to some Ranger intervention and the short version is we camped on our own spot for 2 nights and then had to move onto our friend’s site for the third night.

The park itself is nice, spots were very well spaced out and generally pretty shady. The location is on Murray Lake and there were some large boats and a ramp around for a little bit of entertainment. We had hookups all three nights with access to flush bathrooms and free showers.

In Little Rock we enjoyed a distillery and a brewery (the kids didn’t think that was so hot) and a tour of the Bill Clinton Library, among other attractions.

Overall a very nice outing, save for the heat. There was just no escaping it. Sitting outside in the evening led to oozing sweat and a lethargy to try and avoid any movement. We were comfortable enough sleeping in the tent and the camper with the fan functioning well, but there was no escaping that sticky feeling even when the nighttime temps cooled off.

Only other fun note - along the way I changed out the battery of the camper due to some previous issues. I managed to get the polarity wrong somehow, even though I certainly knew what I was doing. That was a sheepish call to Craig to try and get some troubleshooting help. Yeesh.

Happy 4th, everyone.

Do they shut down the showers in the winter, or is it warm enough there they leave these open? I'm looking for a 1 nighter in the area in February...

Sweeney, you're not a real camper if you can't even go one day without a shower. LoL!
I can go for days without showering, the people around me not so much ;)

Actually, thats is kind of an odd thing that happened becuase of the great unpleasantness. 2 or 3 days without showering is not all that hard -- and my hair is far less oily than before. I had been told that over-shampooing can cause oily hair...its true.

Its not so much for me, but I will be staying Saturdya into Sunday and will be going to Mass, and don't care to smell like camp fire.

....an LP fire pit would take care of that.;)

Ahh, first - sorry for missing this. I’m in Iraq at the moment and not checking on the forum all that often.

Second, I honestly don’t recall the shower situation. This place was a solid half day drive away from where we lived, and we moved away from that duty station more than a year and a half ago. In fact, we moved away from that duty station so long ago that we are making our preparations to move on from the next place where we currently live! We only camped in Arkansas 1 time during the 2 years we lived in Missouri.

Respect and appreciation for your service, Dirty6.

We camped there last spring. The bath house was shared with the day users. When we went for a shower in the early morning a hobo was camped at the door. I had to act as a a “guard” while my wife used the facilities.

Thank you for your service! I hadn't seen your name in a while, Guess we now know why :D

Hobo, or bum, or homeless? 3 completely different strata there. I learned quite a bit about hobo's following the late Hobo Shoestring (RIP) on youtube. He was a legit rail-rider. An interesting way of living, though I propose it ist mostly gone by the rail-side now.

An interesting channel -- check this guy out.

FWIW, I never stayed there -- I wound up leaving the camper at home. It was a short stay while traversing the area. I exchanged it for a Days Inn --- which made me wish I had my camper. Oh well.

I'll be back next fall and probably stop there.

Love your writing and photography, dirty6

After all this, I never brought Serenity. I heard horror stories about hail storms in texas and decided that it wasn't worth the risk of hail damage. I'm kind of glad I didn't, the first week I was here (almost a month ago...geesch) it was in the teens for about 4 days -- water lines freezing everywhere, and I'm sure I would have had problems with mine.

I can't get home fast enough -- living out of a hotel room for this song ha been the most arduous thing I've had to deal with personally for a long, long time.

Blue northers can be a shocker.
