Morning Cup Of Coffee And Weather

Good to see you posting again.
I got talked back into coaching and it is killing my camping time. Cross Country in the fall & Track in the spring, but I’m enjoying it though. Gonna do a few more years, 2-4 anyway &retire for good. I’m actually retired, but able to keep teaching because of a teacher shortage. Double dipping is nice for our finances. My teaching situation is a good one.

It’s always nice when you enjoy your work.

Between the forum being down and coaching Cross Country, I haven’t been on here much lately. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Would like to add the spray foam to our attic. My father had his done and you can go in his attic in the SC summer. In mine in the summer, you’ll be soaking wet in 10 minutes. My attic has 5 windows so you get sunlight into it which doesn’t help. We did have the crawl space encapsulated this summer. Expensive, but it has cleared up some moisture issues we were having.

I was a Speed Racer/Ultra Man/Space Giants/Spaceship Yamato/Battle of the Planets kid in the 70s. Japanese shows filled up early cable tv lineups back then. Must’ve seen every Andy Griffith show made many times over. All of those were on WTCG Channel 17 in Atlanta which grew to become TBS. Ted Turner had to buy the WTBS call letters from a Cambridge, MA station.

Love the man cave. Need to be build more storage here. Our 16 x 20 building is packed and we just have the Camp Inn under an aluminum carport or as I refer to it, our PBR carport. It came through the Hurricane without a scratch and does the job. I just wish I had more storage space indoors.

I"m with Tour, glad to see you post as well :)

Thanksgiving is always a hit around my house. This year was a little different though since so many people weren't available -- it was just Me, Mrs. Sweeney, and a bunch of critters. Watching the obligatory "Planes, Tranes, and Automobiles" -- with an early start of "Its a Wonderful Life" -- Two of my favorite movies of all time.

There is an interview with the actress who played Zuzu talking about the film recorded not too long ago -- just saying, the interviewer is certainly going to be controversial to some. Its worth listening too found here. If you like his style, "Patric Coffin" in your podcast application will find him.

On the spray foam, I'm looking buying a cargo van -- and sw one that looks great but it was spray foam insulated --- probably using "great stuff" -- I'm worried about rust due to moisture being captured without a place to escape. Probably not as much fo an issue for commercial applications to large spaces - but I'm concerned about metal framing with voids and open areas were spray could not reach.

You remember Yamoto? I thought I was the only one -- I knew it as "StarBlazers" - not sure it was the same story though, I've seen a couple Anime stories that use the same animation to tell different stories. Most specifically a "Battle of the planets" which was voiced by Casey Kasem when I saw it -- but a recent version (8-10 years ago) was completely different. BOTP was shown on my local NBC affiliate as a kid, but the Anime (Speed Rader & StarBlazers) came out of Chicago --- Channel 44 and Channel 9 (WGN) before they were a "superstation"

I would imagine its more fun too since you are not 'required' to be there -- there's a freedom that comes with the knowledge "I can walk out and be just fine"

Being trapped in a place that is unhealthy, with mortgage and a $500 car payment doesn't allow that freedom...

From what I hear trapped moisture isn’t a problem. At least not for rust. Sometimes mold can be a problem and that is why some banks won’t make a loan on one.

From what I’ve read most of those Japanese shows were toned down for American audiences due to the standards of the day about violence. Also, they could fit more commercials in for us too. It was probably Starblazers here for us too.

We’ll watch Planes, Trains, & Automobiles sometime over the weekend. Our daughter is home from Atlanta and we always watch it.

Yeah, being at a school without problems is a plus due to the stability. It’s a rural county with a small college with a sizable Mennonite population too. It’s a small high school too. Coaching lets you get to know kids on a more personal level. Being at a point in life where I’m good financially is a huge plus too. No mortgage and pretty much no debt means I can walk way if it turns upside down. We definitely think differently as educators at this point than 20 years ago when we were paying a mortgage and a had a kid at home.

I know a lot of Anime certainly has its share of adult themes, which is probably the biggest reason I don't watch it. Several people I respect have told me how Anime is generally far above what is coming out of the movie mills today. With rare exceptions, they've forgotten how to tell a story, which I think is almost accidental at this point.

For instance, Ghostbusters After Life. Frankly, an unqualified enjoyable film -- while not an artistic treasure like Shawshank Redemption, it was a fun ride. Compared to the final installment (Frozen Empire), which I have not seen nor heard that there is any reason to. Much like the recent Beetlejuice film, it was boring. I stared doing other things within the first few minutes. By the end I was sad that Keaton, who was once just a great actor, couldn't even save it.

This got me thinking, as DO remember Speed as more violent. I remember the gunplay and especially the jewel thief falling into lava --- that REALLY bothered me as a kid. Here's an interesting take on the topic. My knowledge of the broader art form is pretty low.

Jonny Quest -- I didn't realize it was a one season wonder --- Though it isn't Anime since it isn't from Japan.

Thanksgiving is always a movie weekend for me --- Too soon for Christmas Vacation that comes later. But at the mention of it, Shawshank sounds good.

Amish and Menonite are going to be a force to reckon with. Their growth rate is actually quite impressive. I can tell you that I grew up in Amish Country. When I moved to 'the big city' and didn't see an Amish presence, but 26 years later, it isn't common just a few miles from here. Give it another 50 years. It could be interesting. I know sociologists have been talking about this. Personally, I am fine with it! Even during rumspringa :D

Being mortgage free has really changed things for me. Debt is killing this country. I don' know how people can survive with a $500 car payment, if you're lucky enough to have one that low, combined with a $2000 mortgage.

The State Parks of SC does a Scavenger Hunt each December called Dashing Through Parks. It’s done with an app called Goose Chase. Some you can do from, but most you need to go the parks to do. Sometimes it is a specific, like Santa is there on Saturday at park x. We’ve done it each of the years they have had it. You earn points and at certain level you get stuff. The big prize is $3500 in gift cards, but only one person wins it. It gets us out of the house in December and we’ve met some nice people along the way. And maybe I’ll win all those gift cards. For now I’ve got tshirt, stocking cap and some other swag for driving all over upstate SC. It’d be cheaper to buy a T-shirt. This year it will be a blanket. Any other states do this?

Today is one of those lazy days where I don’t want to go anywhere. It’s 8F with gusts to 20 mph and snowing. I think I’ll watch the Sunday Sermon online in my pj’s.

We had that mid week. Not quite the 8, but it was down in the teens with gusty winds. It was pretty miserable. Then to make matters worse, our furnace acted up. You know, having 30 cats in the house with the furnace fan "circulating" --- every hour, runs for 10 minutes --- even when you don't use AC or heat will clog up a filter pretty fast :O My guess is, I need an additional air return in the house - the filter probably "put it over the top"

Working now -- but the temps are a little higher - around 30 today with bright blue sunny skies.

Still I asked myself "WHY?! WHY!? WHY!!! Did I leave packing my wheel bearings off until now....I could have done them 4 weeks ago when the temps were in the 50 and 60's. 41 is the highest in the next 10 days and I have no choice but to do it before it gets really cold, especially if I'm thinking about heading south in about 4 weeks.

SubThread Question

Anyone here been to Quartsize in a teadrop? Or, is anyone planning on being there this year? I know people who have taken their T@Bs out, but not a true teardrop in the sense we think of them.

I'll wager keeping a battery charged will be trivial with Solar. My 230 watts panel dose a fantastic job of that. What are the temperatures like in the last part of January and February? Food prices? Meat primarily - I'm a "bad" carnivore and besides hanging out with friends (if you make them) what else is there to do besides drinking and socialize? I don't expect Disney -- but I'm sure there's "some" draw there besides 'the big tent'

A lot of the nomads I watch seem to do just that. Meanwhile, I continue to work with gusto towards the second act in the play of life. Not sure how many acts are -- I just know it isn't the final act :D --- I HOPE!

Sweeney I imagine you know about the CheapRV youtuber...he's got people helping now and IIRC keep tabs on the latest there.

If its like the rest of high desert in those parts it will be dry warm to 70s and chilly to the 40's at night. Sometimes windy and dusty. The CI will do fine and uour solar should take care of power needs.

Weather Channel says watmer this year vs other parts of the country.

Never been but interested. I passed thru and can say Dont camp by the river if coming from the west...lotta riff raff down there.

You wanna Stay up on the BLM land.
Its a big spectacle, I read...

I"ve watched ChapRV dude -- I used to really like his channel but there was more than once I realized that there is some psych trama on that channel. I may try to get out to the RTR in the new year -- I have to be in Texas mid February. We'll see how this unfolds.

I was hoping for a contingency of 'us' there -- be cool if 3 or 4 Campinns, or just teardrops, were there --- kind of become our own little clan. As it is, If I go, I anticipate that I'll probably never unhook -- just put out traffic cones and mark my spot -- I really don't think I'd trust Serenity on her own just waiting to be stolen.

The whole point is that I anticipate next year I'll be out there -- perhaps from December through March. Probably in a sprinter or transit conversion. Not camping as much as trying to earn a living.

I was browsing Google Maps for something else today, and found a place for you to stop along the way there:
