This is a must to protect your bedding from your all the gear that ends up going on the bed while traveling...

4'9" x 6'8" fits perfectly on the bed.

We got it for about $10 at a Bass Pro, but I'm sure you can get them anywhere.

Someone on the forum, I believe it was L.M., suggested using the thickly quilted moving/packing blankets. That's what we use. They protect the mattress, as well as providing padding for the walls, in case any of your gear slides around (they are a wee bit wider than the mattress).
They have also come in handy for extra blankets, when the weather turned unexpectedly cold. Several times, we have lent them to different friends who are tent camping with us, as extra insulation for their air mattresses in cold weather.
We found a two pack at Costco.

something to keep in mind, by putting stuff on your bed you may be damaging your comforter. If you are using down or some of the great, but expensive, sythetic fills, you should not put anything on them (unles you are OK with damaging the fill)

(simple solution is to just gently roll the comforter back, and place items, on a tarp or something, on the sheets (not on the comforter)

not a big deal if you use a $100 comforter, but for those who have spent a couple hundred on a nice comforter....
