We're hoping to get out in the camper very soon, but probably looking at dispersed camping or at the very least staying away from the communal areas, which has led me down a veritable rabbit hole of the camping toilet variety.

I'm not interested in digging a hole. Definitely not my style, and there is no way I am going to convince our teenage daughter to pee in a bucket. So, for those who have a chemical toilet, please regale me with your recommendations.

It all collapses pretty small, so doesn't take too much trunk space. Fairly quick set-up but not as quick as the pop-up style insta-tents, which I may have chosen if I were to do it again.

Having said that, I think we've only used it a couple times, so not a lot of experience for a recommendation, but so far so good.
So that's our 2 cents worth and your mileage may vary.
 
I sometimes carry a “wagbag” system. They make a folding chair and bag kits with all you need for each use. The gel lets you toss your waste into the trash. It’s made in the US.
 
3- or 5-gallon bucket with a snap-on seat and lid. All can be obtained from Amazon for fairly cheap. Kitty litter, wood chips, and/or eco-gel inside a double layer of bags as appropriate (seal the inner bag when done and leave it in the outer bag...take the outer bag to the trash when full).
 
My wife also uses the Reliance as Dustinp describes above. Stores nicely in the under mattress storage area...works well for her...relatively easy to set up..
 
I settled on the reliance hassock. A little more bulky, but I like that there is a lid so we can close it all up and put the bags and some kitty litter in it for storing.

Understand the double bag suggestion. Corporate jets in the early 70s only had bags in the lavatory designated area, and guess who had to empty it? A newly joined copilot.

We just received a Cleanwaste.com PETT folding toilet (link) & supplies like rmbrowder described above.

YES, it does fit in an under-bed bin of a 560 (550?), with room for supplies. That’s nice; I didn’t want a 5-gallon bucket system kicking around the TV. We have too much stuff.

All the Reliance and Cleanwaste systems seem to have sold out locally and internet prior to the July 4 weekend. Ordering from Cleanwaste direct turned out well Ordered Thursday, received Wednesday (west coast) via Fedex ground.Possibly we’ll be using it this weekend. It seems very sturdy.
 
we bought a folding seat, very sturdy, folds up to be the size of a briefcase. Much better than a bucket if you are challenged vis a vis space in your tow vehicle. Bought the double bags with powder inside. Also bought a popup tent/cabana. Super easy. We used this approach recently when we weren't comfortable with how many folks were using the campground bathroom.

We found cleaning standards to be pretty high, but some times the use is just so high that it's hard to imagine the bathroom being very safe (from a cover perspective). There was LOTS of hand sanitizer in the national park bathrooms, even in the pit toilets.

There are a lot of places in this country where there are NOT a lot of public bathrooms, right now.

I also recommend that women buy a Tinkle Belle (urination accessory so you don't have to sit), as well as a pee bottle of some sort. I recommend a pee bottle for men, as well,.

I agree the Cleanwaste/Wag system is very quick and useful. Yes you do need some privacy like the side tent or similar if you are around other people.
 
We've had the clearwaste folding toilet stowed under bed for over a year. Kids ASK to use it when we camp.

Just replaced bags for a trip out west, but thanks to amazing facilities at RMNP and state parks on the way, didn't need to use it this trip ;)

I would recommend lightspeed or other pop up cabana (doubles as a shower stall if needed).
