Morning Cup Of Coffee And Weather

Just another day at the office! I wish. I spent 2 days with a friend in Traverse City michigan. Not much time to get to know the place, but from what I saw --- I have got to come back here!

I could live without the 30 mph wind, but this skies are just astounding!!!

Sitting in a hotel room that smells like mildew wishing I was sleeping in my CI. Our daughter & her boyfriend are with us so that is why aren’t camping. Four in a 560 Ultra is all little tight. We’re all here for the NASCAR race tomorrow night. Stayed in this same place last year for this.

On the plus side. Mary Ellen & I are getting to see our daughter this weekend & we found a great Mexican place in Camden, SC.

I’ve gotten stuck a couple of times at one of those rooms in Florence for the Darlington Race. Smaller markets made for some interesting stays. Enjoy the race! I’m pulling for a Kyle Busch win. One of the most friendly and courteous drivers I ever flew. It even surprised me!

Been there done that. I remember back in the 90's taking long cross country motorcycles trips, and we'd stay at 'vintage' hotels -- the ones now that have been converted unto flop houses, shooting galleries, or worse abandoned. I think they perhaps were called "Motor Courts" at some point. While most were anything but luxurious they were usually clean. The name brand hotels aren't much better. Smattered with generic art designed to be offensive to no one...ever. Sheets are always clean, but don't pull back to the mattress, same as the floors just don't look under anything.

Thats wierd. Here's a link - sadly the winds were blowing a 30 and I was helping hang a fabric on an awning. We 'called it' not long after becuase the conditions were getting worse and it was 'unsafe'

I’m not surprised he’s a nice guy. I know he does a lot of charity stuff and I’ve heard him in long format interviews where the real person comes out more. He understood the crowd cast him as the “heel” and he played to it rather than fight it. Our seats were right in front of where he parked his car at the entrance to pit road at Darlington when he still raced for JGR. Twice I’ve thought he was going to win here. One time he had tire going down and Eric Jones would at 2:00 am & the other with 20 laps KB blew his engine under caution. I pull for Elliott, I’m a Chevy guy and I like NAPA (one grandfather sold Chevy’s & the other ran a NAPA store) & my wife is a Bubba fan. View attachment 1756651716715.jpeg

Back in ‘97 we started for home from Gettysburg late in the afternoonon a Saturday intending to only drive a few hours. No widespread internet then and every where we stopped on I-81 was booked. One chain had a room in Roanoke their sister location. Stupidly, we told them we didn’t want to go that far. Late that night as we got to Roanoke, we wished we’d taken the room. Went into town to see if anything off the interstate had any vacancies. One place told us another motel down the street had a few, but we’d better hurry. Got one of the last 2 rooms at a “no tell motel” that probably rented by the hour. Still had a thick layer of cigarette smoke in the room near the ceiling. We brought in a blanket we had in the car and spread it over the top of the bed. Cleaned the bathroom before we used the toilet. Left the blanket on the bed & showered 6 hours later at the house.

There are those places too back then :) 97 --- that was about the time I made my trip to Gettysbrug as well --- we were lucky though, the place we stopped was right on our route back home to Indiana. We were on motorcycles, I couldn't begin to tell you what road it was or even what city -- we were headed west(ish) and weren't really concerned about how we got to our destination.

I just remember the mid-century modern decor (before it was chique) and the stand alone pedistal sink, in teal porcelin and matching tile and shower. The place kind of had the same flavor as the hotel in "Plains Trains & Automobiles" only not as rustic. These were the places we looked for and had a very high 'hit' rate finding places worthy of the nights stay. A few years later we went to the Badlands and our luck wasn't as good. It may have been part of the country we were in, or, likely, it was the handoff between generations not occuring, and the businesses falling to foreign investors.

I'm not sure --- I just know there are few of those left, and at least in my neck of the woods, they are relegated to transients, drug dens, or the very rare places like this, converted to apartments. This place is nearby, and would have been the type of place I had such good experiences in...

Same near me. Most are out of business. US 29 runs from DC to New Orleans and once called the Main St of the South. The interstate killed all of these places.

Next year is the 100 year anniversary of its opening - I doubt I'll have time to drive it, certainly to do what Robert is donig. But boy, would I like too. I really admire his filming skills. I'm not sure how many days he took to for the trip yet, but traveling for a few weeks then turning into a great video series that runs for months -- smart move my friend. Smart move.

I really enjoy several content creators (Jacob the Carpetbagger fore example) -- but find it impossible to keep up with them. Jacob posts daily -- and they are 60-minute episodes, sometimes more. I just can't watch 'em all. I"m weeks behind at the moment. Adam the Woo is another, though I was so bored watching him to to disney eveyr 3'rd day -- kind of tuned him out.

So tour, did you have fun with bark in the park? The Brewers allowed dogs into the park for the game.
