dish towel

Don and Sue,
I like your idea of hooks for keys in the cabin. I use the little 3M ones that don't mar the wall in our home closet - I think I will try them in the cabin. Thanks for the idea.
 
To all about dish towel holders:
Does anyone keep the dish towels on their holders with the galley hatch down? I would like that convenience. I was looking that over this weekend with my new BFF George...LOL.

Actually on that subject, Steve and I during my visit reviewed quite a few of what has been posted, as far as mods and accessories. We had some fun with it. We are both skiddish about putting "new" permanent holes in the beautiful wood work.
 
Here is an idea that Steve and I collaborated on, using the latch rods on the hatch. Take some of those binder clips or chip baf clips and hanging the from the rod. Hey no holes drilled, and no damage from a miss drill or broken screw etc.
or even some "s" hooks and put a loop or a grommet in corner of towel. Idle minds LOL

Pat have you tried these yet? Did they work? I think that is an excellent idea, that way if you don't like where you put it just change it.
 
I don't love looking at dish towels. At home I put a towel rack in the pantry so the only time they are visible are when they are in use. When camping I don't want them in my face hanging from the hatch or the canopy like SALE banners at a used car lot.

The discussion here gave me an idea that just might work so I just installed it. Two eye screws and a thin piece of bungee cord should get them out of the way so they can dry and not be too obnoxious.

I was thinking of giving it a try, but will have to make some mods, as our table doesn't have the same placement of the wooden blocks.

I'm back from 20 days and have rethought quite a few things. The cup hooks worked OK for a 1 or 2 day trip in an arid area. In the fog, I needed more hooks to let more dry. Plus its not the easiest of arrangements to use. I did this as I was trying to minimize the drilling and changes to the trailer. I'm not looking at other options. My one concern about the above, it is close to the ground, which means, I'm likely to drop them in the dirt.

Thanks - another great idea! I love the simplicity. Plus if I screw up the installation no one will see the effects! I think this will be my first custom addition!
 
My idea has now been field tested for four days, and if I may say so myself it is perfect! Susan agreed. Holds two dish towels and one dish rag and they aren't even in the way while eating at the table. It is so nice not to have the dish rag spread out in the sink to dry or the towels hanging in my face and blocking my view.

McNuggit -Have you had a chance to field test your hooks?? The cup hooks I used need an upgrading, and this looks like a better solution. While I appreciate Hilditch's aesthetic concerns, I prefer to have the towels ready for use at eye level. Perhaps, the bungee cord would be a good place to leave out towels to dry while we are gone from camp.

Field tested and approved! They look nice, especially with a pretty towel hanging from them, and do the job. We are happy with ours.
 
We just returned from a 9 day trip. I forgot to take a picture but since I had a 3m hook (see photo gallery) on each side of the galley I just ran a light weight cord from the left to the right after dishes were done and spread my towels out - they were dry in an hour and I took the cord down and saved it for the next day. Worked well.
 
I love a place for everything and everything in its place. And getting things UP off the counter is perfect.

Is it possible to put screws into the hood (ribs?) for coffee mugs? Could it handle something heavy like a pie iron?
 
I'm sure screws into the ribs would hold coffee mugs - not sure what a pie iron is.
 
A pie iron is a cast iron cooking piece -- think of it as an advanced hot dog stick. The cast iron "envelope" opens up to hold a grilled cheese sandwich, a hamburger patty, or cornbread. You can make all sorts of things with them. French toast, Cuban sandwiches, individual fruit pies.

They're a campfire cooking essential.

Oh my gosh! Seriously Evan??? You have GOT to get some! Katie would have a ball with them! The most common use is to make pudgy pies - put some pie filling in between 2 slices of bread & cook over the fire. Also pudgy pizzas & toasted cheese sandwiches. There are lots of cookbooks & recipes online to make all kinds of stuff.

You can also purchase them at Wal-Mart, Target, Gander Mountain, REI, Camping World, Cabelas, etc.

The pie irons we had when I was a kid were round...the ones we have now are square - much easier to use with bread. You can also get double size ones.
