E-mail Access While Traveling

I spent some time with the Verizon Techs yesterday and came away with a simple solution to WiFi connectivity. Since we both have our cell phones with Verizon I kept it simple and bought a 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot card. They call it MiFi since it is mobile. It will use 4G if available and 3G otherwise. 4G is 10 times faster than 3G and coverage is being expanded but right now it is mainly only in and around big cities. But nonetheless, if we have cell phone coverage we can have a WiFi hot spot. With various rebates and discounts it cost under $50. It is a small thin card about the size of a playing card. Our plan has a 5 Gig data transfer limit before you start hearing the "cha ching" of the cash register so we won't be streaming movies and concerts with this if I can help it.

Jim, We use the HP/Verizon netbook. It has the Verizon card built in. We have the 5gb package. I don't think we have ever got close to going over. I use an AT&T air card for work. That helps. The hotspot will be the next upgrade when the contract is set to expire. We could then use the netbook or one of the laptops we have or all of them.
Thru my business contacts, I have lunched with AT&T execs. I asked why AT&T could not match Verizon on coverage.
They just said better technology. I guess I had assumed all technology had leveled out. Oh well.

Steve,
This thread started with me having problems with receiving email on my home computer (laptop) while traveling. It worked fine with the home router connected to our cable company but not on the road with a local "hotspot". With the help of a number of people on this forum AND a trouble call to Time/Warner that finally reached someone who understood what I was asking, that problem is solved. The point of this is that I was so intent on getting our full sized laptop working properly I didn't really even look at other "computer" solutions. Now I wish I had. I am particularly attracted to the smaller notepads and notebooks. My son bought himself an iPad and it is amazing. Can your notepad receive your email directly or must you use a web based server such as gmail or hotmail?

That comment about "technology" is really interesting. I think, much as you indicated, that the differences in most things related to phone services are a combination of "production quality", "investment capability" and "product plans". I think that for the most part the technology is out there for anyone to use given the ability to invest in it, and a clear vision of how to use it profitably. As Verizon offers more desired services it captures more of the market and they have even more to invest. I did just read however where AT&T has partnered with Apple to introduce 4G capability in the future iPad 3 so AT&T seems to be willing to compete but Verizon has a big head start.

Jim, Negative on the email. I use Gmail thru google. I tried for sometime to get it thru outlook but it seemed to never work.
I was in an AT&T building today. They are really pushing the UVERSE. My company has benefited from AT&T expanding. The Video Hubs are going in and we are the controls group. They have some catch up but they are making an effort.

Our solution last year, where we were in many non wifi covered areas -we went to the public libraries. All had 30 free access to the net. Not as easy as at the campsite, but it separated work from camping!
