E-mail Access While Traveling

Thanks HTH (sardineman?). Perhaps a trip to the Verizon store will be of value.

HTH = Hope That Helps :-) Sorry, don't have a signature yet. sardineman works for now.

I'm currently trying to find a help page on rr.com....

Sorry, my computer "acronyms" are somewhat limited. Seems to be something of a trend here. I first did go to rr.com and filled out a long form asking for their help. Waiting for the reply from somewhere, perhaps the far far east.

Shew!!!
I use a netbook with Verizon card. I get good signal most everywhere and I use Gmail. I can get Gmail on any computer with Internet. Our little netbook travels well. It has a 12volt adapter for the car. I have even posted on this forum while at camp. It seems very easy.
I did try to run my Gmail thru the Outlook express. Never could get that to work.

Steve,
I thought of that but my problem is not really wanting two email accounts (for a variety of reasons)and wanting to use something like Outlook or Outlook Express. I may need to rethink this.
Thanks, Jim

Jim,

You should be able to use Outlook with gmail, probably more easily than with Roadrunner:

It looks like gmail also supports encrypted messaging. Hmmm, didn't know that, I may try that out.....

You guys are great. Between us we should be able to solve almost anything (with the possible exception of what Paul Revere had in mind).

No problem. Been doing this stuff with the Internet since before Al Gore created it. ;-)

It looks like you might already have things sorted, but I think you should be able to configure your laptop to download your mail through Outlook. I would be very surprised if Roadrunner only allowed this when connected through their modem - that sounds like the Stone Ages. If you can't figure it out with the settings, I'd give Roadrunner a call and threaten to switch service if they don't have a real solution. BTW, I'm liking my Verizon iPad for email these days...

Evan,
I have this problem too. It really is a microsoft issue. Let's see if I can say it another way.
My laptop receives gmail account and comcast account to Outlook at home and at school. But when I am at a coffee shop, campground, etc. I can receive my comcast accout at comcast on line and my gmail account at their server but I cannot just open outlook like I do at home or school and receive either or both accounts. It is a problem with how outlook sees the wifi modem. Once home I can open outlook and all the files (from the whole time I was gone) fly in. I tried last summer to solve this but gave up.

Pat,

I have outlook on my netbook as well as comcast as my cable provider. I can access my email through outlook anywhere I have a wifi connection like Starbucks or the hospital when my Mom was there or my brother's house when we visited them or vacation rentals at the beach.

I am anticipating being able to access my email through outlook when I drive to Wisconsin in about a month. I will let you know if I have problems.

Thank you Pat, you described my problem almost exactly. If you read back through this thread you, Joan and a couple of others suggest that it has to do with "authentication". If so, how to resolve that is the issue. Others say that when away from home they just open Outlook or Express and their email just flys into their inbox. That is what I want. At any rate I generated a heck of a discussion and accumulated a lot of data to sort through. Thank you one and all.
Jim

Pat,
While asking this forum for help I also contacted Time Warner. As you suggested it appears to be a "server authentication" issue. Here is the TW response and perhaps this will help you and perhaps others.

Thank you for contacting Time Warner Cable Road Runner technical E-mail support. As per your Email, I understand that you want to access email via Outlook Express when travelling. I can understand how important it is to access emails, I will certainly help you with the information about the settings required.

You can access emails via Web Mail anywhere using the link:

http://webmail.roadrunner.com

Open the link, enter the Road Runner email address and password and you are signed in.

If you want to access Outlook Express away from home, please note the settings.

Username has to be complete Road Runner email address.

Check the option, "My Outgoing server requires authentication" ( Uncheck it when you are home)

Outgoing port is 587 instead of 25

Check if you have selected, Leave a copy on the server" in Outlook under Advanced tab

1. Click the Tools menu and select Accounts.
2. Click the Mail tab.
3. Select your e-mail account and click the Properties button.
4. Click the Servers tab.
5. In the Outgoing Mail Server section, check the box for" My server requires authentication"
Incoming mail is pop-server.roadrunner.com
Outgoing mail is smtp-server.roadrunner.com

Account name is complete Road Runner email address

6. Click the Settings button.
Select 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server'.
7. Under Advanced tab, select, Leave a copy on the server"

Outgoingn port is 587 and INcoming is 110

I hope the above information is useful and resolves your issue.
Well I hope so too. Now how is anyone supposed to know all that?

Jim,
I think this is account set-up information I need. I will print it out to travel with me. I will try it but will not be away from home until after the 15th when we are headed to Cape Disapointment in Washington.
I also am working on getting my varizon phone swapped out for a phone with mobile hot spot so I think one or the other will work.

as for how is one to know: I have been working with computer programs since 1970 and I have been stumped by it.

Pat,
We are leaving for Yosemite on Friday so don't really have time to test this out now but will when I get back. Need a "hot spot" other than my own Linksys router so will need to go sit somewhere else. Why change out your Verizon phone? It has the best coverage and they offer the 4G Toggle which sets up a hot spot anywhere they have coverage. And, I believe you can share that hot spot with 5 or 6 others (if you are willing to share your password).
Jim

Jim,
yes my cell phone is very old and I want a smart phone and I can get one that doubles as a hot spot.

Jenn,
I have the Solio Classic that is used while backpacking primarily, but I've used it recently to power/charge my Android phone while camping. I have not ever charged it fully - only used it to keep the phone 'alive' for a bit. It may be able to charge it but I haven't tried to just let it sit and do that yet. Here's the link Solio

We have AT&T a laptop and an Ipad2,3G. We LIVE in a campground and if it's full the Wi-Fi is either very slow or non existent and the laptop does me no good. I could get an air card, however the IPad 2 allows me to see email and Internet. Still learning all it will do such as Netflix But think I cannot use it for that due to Apples not allowing adobe flash player . Am on the IPad 2 now. Correction- I CAN get Netflix movies! Love this IPad- you might want to think about adding it to your wish list.

You can get movies on your iPhone that way too (through Netflix). Mick watches them that way all of the time. I got him an ipad2 for his upcoming birthday, which I think he will really enjoy, especially with all of his business travel (he is on the road a lot). But it could be a bad thing...we may lose him to it!

They are fab and I am not sure what I would do without mine now (I just have the first generation). On the road, we just use our phones for email and web stuff. We use AT&T, and during the cross country trip, I seldom lost signal. It worked great. We try to keep some things simple, and I am getting away to get away.

This thread has moved a bit away from my original email issue but that, I am happy to say, has been solved with the "authentication" settings laid out above. Just got back from a week in Yosemite (stayed just outside the park in a rental house since we do not yet have our Raindrop which is due in late August)and the falls and rivers are absolutely spectacular. But this was about email and the house had WiFi. Once I set up the laptop with the above settings everything worked perfectly. Problem solved thanks to the reply from my cable company. Our next step is determining the best phone system that will give us a WiFi hot spot anywhere we have coverage. Verizon is well in the lead at the moment.
