Electric Brake Controler Recommendations

Does anyone have a recommendation for an electric brake controller for a Subaru Forester (2014).

Until recently, I had a Tekonsha Primus on my 2006 Forester. It's now on my 2014 Outback. Seems to work fine.

I know the Flintstone method is in jest...but after being without, then with a controller I am a huge advocate for brakes. It really does make a big difference in stopping ability, personally I would never tow anything without them any more.

I had one or two "pucker stops" when I thought my f150 brakes would be adequate for my 2500lb trailer...just not worth the cost of cleaning the leather.

I don't think the controllers make a lot of difference a sling as they are proportional. I have a Tekonsha p3 that works very well although I would probably try a lower cost controller if anything happened to it...again, as long as it was proportional.
 
One consideration is wired vs remote. We have a relatively new car and we didn't want to mount a controller on or under the driver's dash. We opted for a Prodigy model that has a remote controller that send signals, via RF (radio frequency) to the main controller mounted under the trailer. The remote plugs into a cigarette lighter receptacle in the cabin. Ours is inside the center console compartment, so the remote sits on the console between the driver and passenger. That makes adjustments quick and easy, like increasing the sensitivity or adding boost when the road becomes slick. Here's the one we have. It is more expensive than a wired model, but works great and avoids hard-mounting anything in the car.

Thanks for that info Jim. Our trailer is due in August but the lease on my current vechicle is not up until April. We will be using our sons truck(s) until then. This is the perfect thing for us. After consulting with Cary I ordered from Amazon yesterday.

It looks like the hardest thing about installation with any of the mentioned controllers will be having to drill holes :o in the dash.
I talked with a tech support guy at Tekonsha this morning, who said he's seen installs using velcro. I may try that 1st, before defacing my new Tacoma...
etrailer.com has a video showing an install on a 2012 Tacoma, placing the controller on the left side of the steering wheel, just below the fuse panel access door. Is this where you Tacoma owners have yours installed? Any problems with getting in the way of your knees/feet while getting in/out of the truck?
 
My guys installed my controller in the little compartment to the right of and below the steering wheel. Right below the dial for the 4wd. It was installed with a couple of sheet metal screws and is very secure and out of the way. No wires exposed and no hitting it with the knees. I can see it and use the controls very easily. I have a 2013 Tacoma.
 
I've got the 2013 also, BUT, I ordered a Prodigy, which looks like it might be a bit larger than the Curt Triflex. Did they cut out the back of that recess to accommodate the wiring?
 
Whatever they did to get the wires through is not visible. The unit has plenty of room. You could almost fit two in there. I can access the controls easily and it is very accessible if I want to squeeze the panic stop button. It really was a slick installation.
 
The sheet metal screws were just screwed right through the plastic and into the bracket that holds the controller so it is mounted right in the middle of the space.
 
Can you post a picture or two? I've got to get the dimensions of the P2 to see if it will fit that same space.
 
Received the Prodigy P2 today (VERY quick delivery!) and it fits into the 'shelf' under the 4 wheel drive selector. Now I have to see how I can get it mounted and wired WITHOUT any drilled/dremeled holes...
I'm hoping to use these 3M Command Strips somehow...

How did it work out?

I had mounted the controller for my radar detector using velcro and it worked well.

Unfortunately, I had the dealership install a brake controller when I bought my truck this week and they drilled holes and mounted under the dash above my right knee. I am trying to find a better locale for it but not sure I can move it now that it is installed.
 
I wound up cutting some dense foam shaped to fit the controller pretty snugly in the tray over my right knee. No holes & doesn't get bounced around - so far so good.
