Every one OK?

Well this morning in Canyon Lake, Texas it's 19 degrees and the weather states it "feels like 5 degrees." (Wind makes things ccccccooooolllllddddddaaaaa!!) All these "Winter Texans" that come south for in their RV's brought this stuff with them! The temp day before yesterday was 73, yesterday was in the low 20's...go figure - if you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait a minute! This from a Native Texan!

Ya, the weather here is less serious then what Jenn is getting by far. More annoying with the wind and such. Nothing like what I am watching going on in Jenn's part of the world. So, even though we are not that far away we must be just the other side of the line or something. Still though, they are closing schools here today because of the windchill, not sure I understand that part.
Linda, I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday over lunch time who is in Carrollton TX. He was home from work on a "snow day". I gave him razzing about that, "what did you get, 2" or something?". His response was not that much but the amount of ice they got was crazy. Yikes! So, that is the part us northerners can't fully understand. Ice storms shutting everything down. Just isn't something we see here.

Our district is one of the largest in the state for travel distances. Consideration is given to the fact that we have a lot of kids in rural areas who wait outside for buses to pick them up. Rule of thumb for us (although not set in stone) is if the temp is -25ºF or lower or windchill is -35ºF or more, then school is canceled.
It all depends on what you are used to/prepared for. In northern Minnesota, where Craig is from, temps of -25ºF are the norm. If they closed school for everyday it was -25º, they'd be making up school days into August.

We had a high of 40 up here, but the blue sky and sunshine makes up for it. Not used to such a beautiful February (used to being in the grey and wet...not sure what to do with these webbed feet). All of this sun shine has all 3 of my chickens laying again and the bulbs are starting to poke out. Feels like spring is right around the corner. Hope the folks who got hit are able to dig out (or melt) soon! Stay safe!

In Minnesota we missed the big hit of the last snow only got 4" but it has been cold. We have not seen any ground since Nov and the weather service is warning about Spring flooding encouraging folks who are by rivers and streams to get flood insurance. Lots of snow and ice dams on roofs (a few have colasped). This has been a great year for snow shoeing and skiing.

I think Betsy's got it right - it's all according to what you're used to and prepared for. I have a friend in Carrollton, Tx.! Actually it's my daughter's college roomate. The Dallas area (Carrollton falls in that area) really got it (for Texas standards.) Our friends who live in the McKinney, Tx. area, close to Dallas are full time RV'ers and they said the door to their RV was frozen shut and her hubby had a dickens of a time getting out to the car and those handles were frozen shut also. Lots of ice. Ya'll get snow - we get rain, which freezes, resulting in a big MESS...and you know what they say..."DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!"

In Albuquerque the temp this morning was -6. The last time it got this cold was in 1971. We only received 2-4 inches most of which was blown away by the wind. Roads are clear and dry, but the schools are closed since the busses won't start. I moved down here from Denver 2 years ago and thought I was through with the cold. My co-workers are now blaming me for bringing the cold with me, last I saw it's warmer in Denver this morning than here so they could be right.

Just sick and tired of it here. If the rivers wern't frozen we'd be jumping off bridges. We haven't had but a few days that the temps got above low teens for the last few weeks. Heating oil is now $3.18/ gal. February is generally our "snow" month but we have enough to suit me already. Still, I wouldn't trade places with any of you in Minnesota or North Dakota.

Jim, you are absolutely right! I grew up in Eugene and am a 3rd generation graduate of the U of O. My grandfather was a Webfoot! I will say this dry weather has been a reprieve. We have had above normal rainfall this year. I was worried about the chickens drowning out there. Seems they learned to swim! There has been lots of flood all over the state.

Update from New Mexico:
Due to the high demand for natural gas,the gas company has shut off the gas to our town, no heat except for space heaters, I have 3 going so based on Murphys Law we are probably overtaxing the grid which means they could shut off the power. I do have a woodburning stove in my shop so we might camp out there tonight if the power should go out. If I already had my 550 we could camp out there, but that is still some months out. I wonder if a teeny tiny woodburning stove would be a viable option. I know that a stovepipe coming out of the top of that classic design would certainly look rustic.

It's 82 and sunny in Maui, but where we live in Chicago I guess there's a bit of snow. What's the problem???
