Mattress, poles and battery

We did the same as Charlie and Bernice -the Sam's club 2 1/2" topper. Tim too has size 13 feet. He is 6'5 and sleeps on side. He says the foot space really isn't an issue, and he LOVES the Memory Foam. I was fine without the foam -I'm tall 5'10 and carrying too much weight, but have to admit is pretty cozy.
Also -we got microfleece sheets on sale from the Company Store catalog. LOVE them!! they do shed a bit at first.

I searched prices yesterday at several places: Target, JCPenney (advertised 30% off sale), Kohl's (advertised 50% off sale), WalMart, Amazon, and a few others. Prices ranged from a low of around $50 to about $150. I am sure there are differences in quality, but I'm not that familiar with them to be absolutely sure of what the best quality/best priced item would be. So when I saw the Overstock item listed and showing an 86% markdown off of an over $200 list, I bit. I'll be sure to give our impression (pardon the pun) of the mattress here after we've used it.

That was fast, ordered 36 hours ago and it's in the CampInn already. It's a Sleep Innovations topper made for Serta, if that means anything to anybody. The fit is excellent, with about 1/2" to spare all around. Peggy and I just sewed the bed sheets, as CampInn's Teardrop Travel Tips site suggested -

TIP 2: Bedding: A twin size comforter and/or blanket will fit well. Anything larger tends to be too bulky to tuck in.

Using a queen size fitted sheet and a full size flat sheet works well. The full size flat sheet allows about a 10" overhang on both sides of the bed, which can easily be tucked in. If you choose to use a queen size flat sheet instead, there will be about a 15" overhang on both sides of the bed.

On all models, an easy way to make the bed and keep the sheets in place is to sew the bottom of the flat sheet to the bottom of the fitted one. This is done just like waterbed sheets. Line up the centers of the bottom ends of the fitted and flat sheets. Then pin them together and machine stitch the two sheets together, sewing only between the two elastic corners of the fitted sheet . If you sew onto the elastic corners of the fitted sheet, you will tear both the stitches and sheets when you try to put them on the mattress.

- and they're going back on the new, luxurious mattress. We are going to be campin' in style now.

I'm pretty sure you will like the memory foam topper when you use it. It made a huge difference for us even though we have only used it once so far.

Lyle, we bought the Queen size. I debated between the queen and the twin for a bit, but decided on the queen, thinking the 'edge' would probably be pretty noticable. And the only reason I considered the twin was because of the loss of foot room for me, which turns out to be a non-issue. My feet (size 11) fit fine with the topper.
 
We didn't opt for the mattress for allergy reasons. However, we found these at REI (on sale right now):

The mats fit the cabin perfectly and a queen sized fitted sheet snugs them in nicely. They seem firm and thick enough at 3.5 inches and my hip doesn't bottom out at all! We are both 6'2" and we weight between 180-190 lbs each.

We've got something very similar to these for backpacking, and they are great. Most people would say they're way to heavy to carry around in a backpack, but we're old and need them to have any hope of walking the next day.
They don't cause any problems for you as far as foot room?
 
Hi Ken, no, no problems for foot room. I am a women's 12, and my hubby is a man's 12 1/2. The CampInn came in a 4 inch height... and my husband has an inch to spare. He is the main problem since he is the back sleeper! ;)

If this happens not to be thick enough... we can thow in a 1/2 inch closed cell foam. What is also nice is that we can adjust the firmness.... they also fit so snugly into each other that the "crack" between them isn't an issue where you are falling between the mats and hitting the floor of the cabin.
 
It sounds like it is working for you. And the nice thing is you can just deflate and roll them up if you don't want to use them - or, you can take them out and lay on them in a screen tent if you feel like it. Nice!

But the memory foam made a huge difference for us. I don't know if it really matters how thick the memory foam is for comfort. It is a great product.

I'm confused. I layed on my back on the standard mattress, and my size 13 feet already ran out of room at the foot of the 550. If I ADDED memory foam, I can't see how that would work.

I can see doing the memory foam on some other mattress, or going the air mattress route. Glad that your feet are somehow fitting.

are these more comfortable than memory foam?

is there a consensus on what is more comfortable?

AlCat, we have 1.5" of memory foam, and my feet can touch the underside of the cabinets when I point them straight up in the air - I'm size 11. But so far, I haven't heard anybody complaining about running out of foot room, although it seems possible if you have big enough feet.

Perhaps, nobody really sleeps with their feet pointing straight up?...
 
Scissors. If you want a mattress topper and your big feet create an issue, cut it out. Hopefully your feet don't need memory foam. Case closed.

Using an air mattress is the worst thing to use in the Teardrop. My Uff Da Inn came without a mattres. Had to sleep on an air mattress two nights and froze!

Suppose another solution would be to cut the bottom out of the storage units above your feet!

my feet are size 13. So make your big toe two inches longer.....

It's not a "big" issue, but I am spec'ing my camper, now, and I need to decide if a mattress is "in" or "out" (and I'd get my own, after I take delivery)

I also thought it would be cold, but a couple of members seem to like the air mattress route

which is why I asked - maybe they have a solution, like a 1.5-inch memory foam topper on a two-inch air mattress....

if I can save an inch of "height" where my feet are, it would help

(I so also like the idea of being able to pull the air mattresses out and lay them in outside if you want to laze outside....but I'm concerned about the slipping in between while you sleep, potential issue)
 
I think if you want to laze outside... use the screen doors. It's close enough to 'being outside' that I don't think you would go through all the trouble of tearing the bed apart to actually do it. Somehow, using an air mattress just seems wrong - but I've never tried it in the Camp-Inn. With 1.5" of memory foam, the bed in the Camp-Inn is almost every bit as comfortable as our real bed at home. The air mattress that we used in our old tent wasn't anywhere close.

Hilditch had a good idea - put down as much foam as you need to be comfortable - but cut it out at your feet if it is causing a problem.
