Overnite in Rocky Mountain National Park

Another case of cabin fever and I decided to try an overnite up in the mountains. First thought was to try the town of Lyons. They have a nice park and it would have been fun to wander around in town this morning. But the park was locked up tight. So fall back was to head up into Rocky Mountain NP. This time of year is usually good for photographing the elk so figured I would stay in the Moraine Basin overnight at the campground there and then shoot at dawn in the morning.

Campground was nearly empty so space wasn't an issue. Setup went quick and then decided to have dinner at Smokin' Daves BBQ in Estes. Really good barbecue.

Overnight the skies were crystal clear. The elk could be heard calling. Stars were spectacular since there is little to no light pollution to mar the views.

It reminded me of of the quote at the end of 2001 A Space Odyssey when the last transmission from Dave Bowman is "My God its full of stars".

Along about 4:30 or so it started to snow. After rousing myself I shot a couple of photos the the CI.

PS. With the snow and overcast, while I did see a large herd of elk, they were about a mile out into the valley so no nature photos this trip.

Pretty cool. Literaly
Is that a window reflective coating on the windows?
That is really neat to hear the Elk.
We are heading to Co. and beyond next summer.

Oly, it's the glow of the wood burning fireplace upgrade. Goes well with the fully extendable/retractable hot tub installation...

But seriously I have a remote strobe inside with a gel on it being triggered from the camera.

Make sure you make reservations if you come up during the season. One of the main campgrounds will still be closed next year for a road renovation that that cuts the spots in the park by about 25%. And they are tough to get anyways. Alternatives to check out is Hermit Park run by Larimer county. Just outside of Estes Park and great scenery also.

I like how your curtains are all open so you can actually use the panoramic windows. I can never get my curtains to stay open.
