The government closed dreaming and planning !

Frank's trip post mentioning Moab UT got me thinking and I started poking on the web.
I followed an Arches link to nps.gov and discovered they not only gated the physical parks
but the virtual ones (nps.gov website) too !!!

I guess those websites even without updates are so expensive to keep the disks spinning right Evan?
I understand not taking reservations etc, but you end up stuck at a home page.
I guess AllStays is a choice but no builtin pictures or maps and good luck for GOV links.

Well being a tech geek I guess given the short time they had to wrap up it is the quick/clean answer.
It would take a while to disable selected pages for all the various parks.
No staff means no one to reboot if it crashed and worse they couldn't even catch a hacked server.

Oh well I just can't daydream during lunch. Frank and all on the road,
I hope you have a good trip in spite of the stupidity...

I'm sure it takes extra work and manpower to go around shutting down all the web sites. Go figure...

And our wonderful President 'Stompy Feet' has instructed the Park Service to make life as miserable as they can for the people, according to a National Park Ranger!

Yah, without posting my thoughts on all this other than to say they're a bunch a spoiled rotten kids... there's "Half Joking 28th Amendment going around simply stating that congress shall not pass anything that they are not subject too.. benefits, paychecks etc... heheh..

Anyway, getting back to camping. it's a real PITA and Utah is talking about taking back the Fed parks for misuse and violation of the original agreement.. something like misuse of resources..heheh.
That would be funny to see the reaction... anyway, gives a good excuse to comeback...
fun?....
dunno, I'm just a dumb camper towing something behind me that is able to keep up... heheh...

I hear the hiking in Yosemite is amazing right now! Have a few friends that claim the road is closed with a barricade, but the path was wide open. :) No fears of cars being towed as there was no one there to check too! It is hard to shut down nature and all. And don't the parks belong to the people in the first place? That is what Rangers in Yellowstone taught us this summer. Hmmmm. Too bad we are all being punished for something we have very little control of....at the moment.

I agree. Kind of like shutting down some of the outdoor memorials in D.C. In my view, meant only to stir people up. Ah, politics...

don't be so sure that there aren't people around to ticket cars parked where they aren't supposed to be. Local SF paper had a story about just that. The lot was padlocked so the person parked on the street, and got a ticket from a federal cop. Just a heads up.

agreed that hiking would be great, but I'd be worried about what happens if I am on the trail and I get hurt. Sometimes even the best-prepared folks need a little help.

Well it's day 6 for me at home due to this, but at least I'm catching up on all the projects I put off while we were off camping..........

Wouldn't it be best if we all tried to restrain ourselves on bringing the partisan politics on to this forum?

My wife and I are in the last few days of our dream trip "out west." I put more planning into this trip than they do into a space shuttle launch. I had made plans on collecting a bunch of national parks and monuments. We had planned on decoarating the drop with vintage stickers from the parks as we visited... We drove past The Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, Arches, and a few dozen other parks and monuments. We did have and are having a great trip, just not the same. We ended up mostly in State Parks which were nice but very crowded and busy due to being the only game in town. Reservations were a must and not always available.

Most of the state parks were frankly too civilized for us. We prefer more backwoods and solitude. Camping on pavement is not our idea of camping.

I plan on posting a full account of our trip as soon as I get back home.

AsheWolf,

I agree with your partisan comment. Simply - all parties in the two branches of government are
wrong to use this as a "tactic". <hypocritical further political comment self censored>

You are some of the folks I meant by "Frank and all on the road". I can't imagine the frustration after
that amount of planning. I hope you have had a relaxing time and enjoyed the scenery around the perimeters.
Most of that area is spectacular.

Wishing you a SAFE drive home!

The $85 I spent on a national parks pass...... Should have spent it on bolt cutters.

Home tomorrow. Undoubtedly the parks will open Monday. My timing is well....impeachable.

Yep, parks are opening back up - I think the states are running them.

I defiantly agree that you have impeachable timing.

OK...I went to youtube for Norm Crosby..enjoyed a skit with him and Deano...let us know what the connection is with the park closings and our "government'!!!!

Norm Crosby was known as The King of Malapropism. I believe Ken was referring to Evan using impeachable instead of unimpeachable.

Joan is right (and for Evan using 'defiantly' rather than definitely) - old Norm luckily had nothing to do with the serious topic at hand!

The Grand Canyon opened today.

"Missed it by that much."

In other news, our government is not impeccable.....

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR........... AsheWolf mad. Rabid even.

When the federal government shut down affects our lives this much does it make you think that we have too much government control? The largest employer??? Something wrong?
