What to do, what to do...

Ohio was doing battle with us for a while too. Apparently, they felt the Springfield in the Simpons was there, but all of us in Oregon knew it was here. Matt Groening is from Portland, and I grew up next to the town he was drawing. It seems Eugene could be Shelbyville. And for any Simpson fans (who don't know), many of the streets in Portland, provided the last names for many of the characters. We might not have big trees compared to Washington and California, but we have the Simpsons! :)

Maybe this'll shut some people up - though I doubt it...Everything's bigger in Texas!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Tree,_Rockport

This from the website:

The Texas Forest Service estimates the tree to be over 1,000 years old, other recent estimates place it nearer to 2,000 years old. The Big Tree is a charter member of the Live Oak Society of America, and has been the subject of one of Ripley's "Believe It or Not" cartoons.

The Big Tree is Texas' largest and quite possibly oldest Live Oak tree and is found on the Lamar Peninsula of Aransas County in the Goose Island State Park. It possesses a circumference of over 35 feet, is more than 45 feet tall and has a crown spread of 90 feet. Some call it the "Largest Live Oak in the World, in Rockport, Texas."[4]

Record or Champion Trees are determined by their girth, their spread and their height. The near-continuous gulf breeze limits the height of this oak. Therefore, there are many Live Oaks that surpass this tree's height, however when the tree's girth is factored in, it makes this one the Champion Live Oak in Texas. The state's second largest Live Oak is in Columbus, Texas.

Linda,

That is impressive!

I think we will have to spread the wealth around. As I am a bit of a tree nut (no comments please), here are some interesting facts:

Oldest Living Trees in the U.S.

Trees with ages which have been verified:

California: Oldest Trees - Bristlecone, 4500+ years; Giant Sequoias - several, 3,000-3,600+; Coastal Redwood, 2,200 years; Foxtail Pines - 1,600-2,200 years; Western Junipers - 1,800 - 2,200 years;

Colorado: Oldest Tree - Bristlecone, 2,400+ years; Limber Pine - 1,500-1,600+ years;

New Mexico: Rocky Mountain Juniper - 1,800+ years; Limber Pine - 1,600+ years;

North Carolina: Bald Cypress - 1,600+ years;

U.S. Trees with ages that have been estimated:

Florida: Bald Cypress - 2,000 years;

California: Coastal Live Oak - 2,000 years

South Carolina & Louisiana: Southern Live Oaks - 1,500 years

Utah: Rocky Mountain Juniper - 1,500 years

Size
For size, trees are rated on a point system that utilizes a combination of height, circumference and 1/4 of their crown spread. For a current list of mega trees in the U.S, go here:

You got that right George! That's why we're all hangin' together!

Betsey - I'm a tree nut too - just not into stats that much. I love to take pictures of them and ooh and aww. I remember one that George Washington planted at Mt. Vernon and it's still standing. It's awesome! To think that the first President of the United States started it out, touched it and probably sat under it inspires me...

I think I'll take all the great trees from all the States and adopt them. And maybe some day they will come to think of me as their old mum...in a very real and legally binding sense...

Couldn't resist.
