The "Dew Drop Inn" Chronicles

Wow! Thanks so much for the progress report! I head that way in just over a week!

I hope the rest of your trip goes smoothly!

You are so welcome Bev and Dan n Vanessa, we actually missed seeing Cary yesterday so we dropped in again before we hit the road. Our car is so jam packed with our stuff for the teardrop that we didn't have any room for the bedding that we needed, so Cary was kind enough to take delivery of it and we wanted to check it out just in case there was a problem with the order. We got flannel sheets and Polar tech blankets from LLBean because we'll be doing mostly off season camping and also in that vein a wool mattress topper from Amazon on Joan's recommendation, thanks Joan, it looks great. We ended up staying a couple hours, Cary pointed out many of the improvements and tweaks that CampInn is incorporating into the new trailers, like the new vents in the air conditioning hood that makes it way more efficient, the channeling on the leading edge of the 550 that does dual duty as the trim over the aluminum skin seam and also where the alcan cover attaches and the slick adhesive trim that covers the skin seam on the back of the trailer, the built in spray nozzle in the sink, the new sleeping cabin cabinet configuration etc. none of which I recall seeing on the web sight, cool.

We made it to Michigan, Susan's home state, born in Detroit, grew up in Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor, that makes 4 states in a days drive, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and the MI. Ann Arbor tomorrow and if it's Sunday it must be Toronto!

Michael

Susan and I had a great time in my home town of Toronto, visiting with friends and family and so forth."The Dew Drop" in is still in production so we decided to take the opportunity to swing through Niagara Falls and visit with a cousin I haven't seen in 20 years and of course experience the falls, (standing next to that volume of water falling a hundred feet and more, feeling the sheer power of it is like nothing else on earth) and then on to Cleveland to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, that has been on my must do list for a while and it is well worth it. They do a great job of telling Rock and Rolls story through memorabilia and interactive displays, from Les Paul's prototype guitars, Sun Records recording equipment, Muddy Waters electric Martin, Hendrix stage wear and on and on. From Cleveland we drove to Ann Arbor to visit with friends. We drove into Detroit today to spend the day at that city's superb art museum. Living in the west we are not often in the presence of paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Mattisse, Degase, Picasso, but there they all are in this humbled but once great city.

We got more pictures of "Dewey" today, her doors are on, the TV is in, front windows are there, curtain rods in place, fantastic fan installed, won't be long now. I called Cary today and we are scheduled for a Wednesday pickup, we've waited 150 days since we sent in our check, I guess we can wait 6 more days.

Michael

You must have about three days left to wait. That's nothing compared to my four or so months.I can't wait to hear about your adventures.I'm looking forward to running into you in my future travels.

Susan and I began our day in a winter wonderland, Janesville WI got about 6 " of snow this morning where we spent the night on our way back to Necedah. We got a big surprise when we got to Necedah, our trailer was finished, last we heard it wouldn't be ready till Wednesday. So we got through our paper work and orientation, oh did I mention that she's beautiful and we are so happy that she is finally built and coming home with us. In these parts snow comes with loads of salt on the roads, our car is white from the salt, so we are going to put a coat of wax on "Dewey" in the morning and load her up in the afternoon and head south the day after. There is a beautiful high pressure moving east, we hope to ride that all the way to Florida, we've had enough of snow and freezing temps.

Michael

Oh dear, salt. Ouch. Can't you hand around till the snow melts and roads dry? Camp in the parking lot or something.

Hi Pat

Weather looks good for tomorrow, should be nice sunny dry conditions when we hit the road on Wednesday.

Michael

I hope you and Susan have a great time. I'm looking forward to posts about your adventures and some advice on dos and don'ts for when I FINALLY get to pick up my new trailer.
I've read the horror stories about the salt and corrosion. Are you using the spray wax before you leave?

Pat, I use 3M paste wax on the boat, works great against salt water, seems to me it'd be perfect for this situation as well. Today is the big day, we're pullin "Dewey" outta the nest!

Michael

WELCOME TO FLORIDA!!!!
Hope you have reviewed the Florida State Park system. We have ALOT of nice parks. There have only been a couple that we won't return to (various reasons).
We will be at St. George Island in Apalachicola "AGAIN" next week Dec 4-6. If you are in the panhandle area it is a nice park as is St. Joe's according to Jenn.

INN JOY!!

I love St George Island, we haven't camped there in 20 years, it's on our itinerary. We hope to spend some time at Smoky Mountain NP on our way south but if this cold weather persists we may just head straight to Florida.

Michael

Thank you for those warm regards, warm feels good in all this cold, and regarding warm, that seems to be the trend as the cold front moves on so we are trending toward Great Smoky Montain NP at present and Florida after that. We've never been to St Joes Jenn, might get the chance to camp there on our way back west. We had our first day on the road towing "Dewey", so far so good, our Mini did an admiral job, I mean we can definitely feel it back there but we still have plenty of power in reserve. The new Mini Cooper was designed from the ground up for club racing so it has aggressive low end torque a robust transmission and mondo all around disk brakes, good for towing too. We'll see how our Mini copes with towing in the mountains when we hit the Smokys, I mean heh, we live in Washington state and most of our outings are going to involve steep grades so we'll see.

Michael

Dan and Vanessa, Michael and Susan ....it's crazy cool you all have left the nest with your new Camp-Inns. Safe travel and much fun on all the journeys ahead of you.

My 550 is in the next row to go. Looks as though there is another 550 next to mine with the others in the row being 560's. I've opted for delivery when 'Little Hoot' is complete, the weather is just too unpredictable at this time of year. Plus, I need to guard those vacation days until I'm retired.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Bev

Happy Thanksgiving to you Bev, we did make a point to check out your trailer when we were at Camp-Inn yesterday, almost done, it looks very nice, I am partial to the 550s. You are smart to opt for delivery, the weather has been crazy, it was 5 degrees in Necedah this morning. Stay warm and save your precious vaca days.

Michael

No pictures yet I'm afraid, have to review the FAC page and Franks tips before we can post visuals

The cel service at St George Island is intermittent, an attempt at a lengthy post earlier in the week got lost in the mix so I'll try again with shorter installments.

I just have to mention how the folks at Camp-Inn really came through for us at delivery time. We arrived in Necedah a couple days early just to check on things and were told by Marty that our trailer was ready, and we thought well can we have it then even though our orientation wasn't till later in the week. And Marty said sure, so they dropped everything and sped us through the orientation and paper work and trailering tips and so forth and got us on the road ASAP. Thanks
again Camp-Inn for getting us going 2 days early and for building us a great teardrop!

When we left Necedah it was 5 degrees. Many folks on the forum have said that towing a trailer is more exhausting than normal driving, they are so right, we drove 300 miles on the road to Normal IL that 1st day and when we got to the Motel 6 we were bagged and tagged and about 10 degrees warmer.

The next day we made 350 miles to a Lexington Motel 6 and 10 degrees warmer. We had to get an oil change at a Mini dealer so we headed for Knoxville which was above freezing but not yet warm enough to melt the snow still scattered about.
On Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend we headed to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, we could not believe the amount of traffic funneling out of the park, it was bumper to bumper for miles, by the time we got to our campsite the place was deserted, the park stores closed that day, the campers were all gone, we had the campground and the trails all to ourselves. And it was our 1st night in our trailer and it could not have been more comfortable. It got down into the 30s that night but we were warm and cozy and got a great nights rest. We stayed for 3 nights and then got a little nervous about the weather so we headed down the mountain and started for Geogia. That's all for now, I'll try posting this before continuing

Michael

Hey-hey-hey.... Just a "Rock'n & a Roll'n"... fun...

Trip Planning... you might check the Forum >Trip Planning might find some useful links there too.

Also, not sure what device you're using, but sometimes it's easier to type out what you wanted to say, then log in and Copy/Paste in to the forum... remembering of course that it only takes "TEXT" formatting... not the fancy-schmancy fonts/styles/links etc.. have to Manually "TAG" them. Forum search for "tags" and you'll see the more commonly used ones..

HTH..
