Build 0766 New Happy Camper

On April 15, 2018 the ownership of 766 changed hands from Venice Florida to Tallahassee. After extensive research the Camp-Inn 550 was the perfect fit. Build 766 does not have the front bumpout with inside and outside storage so I installed a tongue box which fit the predrilled tongue holes perfectly. The box is the ideal size for storing small propane bottles since I use my small portable stove that fits in the usual spot. Also provides a location for wet tents, sandy folding rugs, chocks, power cords and other items you would prefer not to store in your cabin or vehicle. The additional tongue weight was not significant; however, I balanced it out with my water bottle distribution as I carry water as this build does not have tanks or sink. Carefully selected my ball mount so the TD is level when towing and no disconnect is required on level sites. I believe it improved towing characteristics and believe it or not MPG.

The fan blade was broken from the fantastic motor shaft so I replace the motor and fan assy. Was able to gorilla glue and repair the old fan blade assy so I have a spare.

Althought my tow vehicle has the same 5 lug pattern as the TD its spare profile was to high for the fender well so I will continue to carry the standard 12" trailer spare. I had hoped to reduce weight by leaving the TD spare behind.

It has been fun getting through my extensive check list and on June 27 returned from my first camping adventure at St. Joe State Park on Cape San Blas Florida. The AC was a critical necessity.

Thanks for having this forum as it addressed so many of my issues regarding side tent setup, sunshades, cooking options and organizing ideas.

Having tent camped and traveled extensively in my old Dodge Van I am now Glamping.

I think the tongue box looks great! Having the ability to haul some of those dirtier items outside of the tow vehicle or cabin of the teardrop is a real asset. I deleted the propane and sink from my build but do have the bump out which leaves much less space on the tongue. I'd like to make better use though of that space and have been brainstorming how to build some sort of platform to better haul wet outdoor matts or garbage for instance.

On a separate note, if you haven't discovered the 1 pound refillable propane tanks yet - I'd recommend you look into these. I've bought around 5 tanks and will fill 3-4 in a batch as needed. Cary Winch warned that the frame was not designed for the additonal weight of a tongue box and the holes are for the bumpout attachment. He suggested I keep the box and content as light as possible and watch for any signs of bending or cracking of the frame. I am not overly concerned as weight was a primary factor from conception but the warning was much appreciated and I will be vigilant.
 
Glad I ran across this about the tongue weight concern - was in the process of designing a bike rack to fit the the tongue where I could mount 2 bikes in-line just over trailer height. Have since changed plans and have designed one for the back of the wrangler that will allow for the bikes to be high enough to clear the lp tank - in process of fabrication right now. If it works as planned (hoped) - will post pictures.
 
Welcome, I instill tongue box myselfas well , I think i like it better like that, I put lanterns, white gas and such and I don't have to smell it inside the car or trailer.
